Missoula City Council places a halt on any new marijuana dispensary licenses
More than two years since the commencement of recreational marijuana sales in Montana, state and local authorities are considering methods to prevent the opening of new dispensaries. The Missoula City Council has implemented a two-year moratorium on new dispensary licenses within city boundaries.
Similar legislation for a statewide cap is being developed by state legislators.
Discussions are also taking place in the Montana Legislature, where the Interim Economic Affairs Committee is preparing a bill for the upcoming session that would limit dispensaries to current numbers for two years. During a hearing in June, Kate Cholewa, the head of the Montana Cannabis Industry Association, stated that the industry supports the draft.
Cholewa mentioned, “It’s essentially putting a hold on expansion. In my view, this legislature has the ability to accelerate or decelerate. This draft is about proceeding cautiously.” As per the Montana Department of Revenue, there are over 400 licensed dispensaries in the state.
The draft bill would prevent the state from processing any new dispensary licenses but would permit existing licenses to change hands. The committee will vote on advancing the draft at its August meeting.
